Seminar Portfolio
Hallmark 1: We Proclaim By Our Lives Even More Than By Our Words That God is Good
This is a picture of a letter my mom's coworker sent me along with a care package. Her care package included snacks and self-care things. In the letter, she included helpful tips on how to manage the stress of college. I included this in my portfolio because I received this package at a very crucial time in the semester. The package came to me during the midterm week which was very stressful for me and I deeply appreciated this thoughtful gift.
Hallmark 2: We Honor The Dignity And Sacredness of Each Person
This artifact is a letter from my mom. I also got this letter around midterms. When I read the letter I was confused because the letter was dated in June. The letter was filled with positive and encouraging messages. When I had called my mom and asked about the letter she told me that during the parent orientation they suggested that they write their kids letters of encouragement that would be mailed out around midterm week. I added this to my portfolio because this letter helped support me during the journey of my first college midterms.
I added my mom's letter to hallmark two because I feel that the letter honored my dignity. I connected the letter to the third bullet point under hallmark two which states, "We dedicate time, space, and personnel in the support of the individual's spiritual/personal journey." Writing the letter was completely optional and my mom chose to write it in hopes to support me during my college journey. Her letter also connects to the first bullet point under the hallmark that says, "We create environments that encourage the development of the whole person." In the full letter not only was she encouraging me in my studies but she was encouraging me to remain a good person.
Hallmark 3: We Educate For And Act On Behalf Of Justice And Peace In The World
The artifact I chose for this hallmark was a picture of the books from a book reading I went to. At the book reading, I listened to three writers share a piece of the writing to us about how they overcame injustices that were done to them. All three of the writers had a disability. Two of the writers were blind and the other writer had a mental disability. I chose to include this because it was my favorite artifact and it dealt with injustices.
This artifact belongs in this section because it connects with the third bullet point under hallmark three. The third bullet point under hallmark three states, "We infuse classroom experience with global perspectives and integrate classroom learning with civic and cultural interactions." This point connects because we got to learn about the perspective of life from people who have disabilities. We also got to learn how they took the injustices that happened to them and didn't let it stop them in life.
The artifact I've chosen is the writing lab schedule that's taped onto my wall. I chose this because I visit the writing lab once a week for my English composition grade. Going weekly has been very beneficial for me. After a good amount of writing lab visits, I learned a lot about writing and college in general. I have been seeing improvement in my writing for English and in other subjects too. I included this into this section because I really love how they're so generous and eager to help at the writing lab. The writing lab has become a space where I can be very productive with little distractions.
The second and third bullet points under hallmark seven describe the writing lab very well. The second states, "We create curricular/co-curricular interactions that facilitate student-centered learning/teaching environments." The picture of the writing lab schedule belongs in this section because the writing lab is also a quiet place to get work done. In the writing lab, they set rules about the noise level being low to give students that chance to think and work productively on their assignments, They've set it up this way to give students as much potential to do good on their work as they can. The third bullet point says, "We actively support the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, psychological and social growth of the members of our learning community." This supports the writing lab because it is a place for students to get help and support on assignments. They encourage students to come in for help and to ask questions. They schedule daily drop-in slots where students can come in and work or get help.

This belongs in the section of Hallmark 1 because the care package was an act of kindness. I connected this act of kindness to the first hallmark because her action to me was another reminder that God is good. To me, receiving this package at a very stressful time was a sign for me to stay strong and keep going. It’s one thing to have the idea of a kind act and it’s another to actually follow through with the action. I am extremely grateful for the idea of sending me something so thoughtful was placed upon my mom’s coworker's heart.

Hallmark 4: We Commit Ourselves To Community Service
The artifact I chose was our group picture from call to action day. On-call to action day, we spent the day with young adults who had various mental challenges. To start the day off we played an icebreaker game. Next, Tareese and I took them and the rest of the class on a campus tour. After the tour, we did chalk drawings in the quad until lunchtime. When it was lunchtime we ate and conversed with our guests. To end our day we closed out with a charismatic karaoke session. I included this into hallmark four because it was nice to give back some of my time to people who might not get to interact with many other people that aren't apart of their day to day routines.
This artifact belongs in this section because my whole class gave back their time and I think we learned a lot from the people. This artifact fits appropriately with all of the bullet points that fall under hallmark four. The one I feel like applied to our call to action day the most was bullet point three. Bullet point three states, "We ground our service in the spiritual practice of reflection-action-reflection, and we incorporate the process into our service-learning commitments." This bullet point reflects the call to action day because before the call to action we reflected on what ideas we already had about their community were. After the call to action day, we reflected on our experience and found that many of our ideas were wrong. Our guests taught us that although people may look at them in pity they embrace their disabilities and it makes them stronger, more free-spirited, and appreciative of life than most of us are.
Hallmark 5: We Embrace The Gift of Diversity
The artifact I chose for hallmark five is a picture myself and a friend that I made this semester. My friend's name is Donte and he's also living right across from me in JB. Donte's from Atlanta and has eight sisters. One thing that makes us very different from each other is that I'm from Daly City and have only 1 sister with no other siblings. We come from different places and grew up in different family dynamics. Donte and I have grown close and we've created a nice bond. I added this artifact because this friendship is one of the friendships that has helped make my first semester of college bearable.
This picture of Donte and I belongs in this section because our lives were so different from each other before we came to NDNU. After meeting each other and sharing our lives we noticed several differences. This connects to the first bullet point in hallmark five. The first bullet point in hallmark five says, "We welcome to our community people of diverse cultures, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic circumstances, gender, age, sexual orientation, and faith traditions." This bullet point explains how although Donte and I come from different places and are different genders this didn't stop us from embracing each other as friends and helping each other navigate college life.
Hallmark 6: We Create Community Among Those With Whom We Work And With Those We Serve
This artifact is a photo of my friend Ruth and I. Ruth is also my next-door neighbor. Not only is Ruth my neighbor and friend shes also my study partner. Like me, Ruth is a science major. We have the same Gen Bio class. The class is intense and requires an immense amount of studying and notetaking. Before exams and quizzes, we plan study dates where we grab lunch or dinner together then study. In this picture, we were having a lunch date before we studied. I added this picture into my portfolio because Biology is my most challenging class and it has been nice to find someone study with that is just as passionate about science as I am.
This picture belongs here because it goes with bullet point four-under hallmark six. Hallmark six states, "We create interactive and collaborative educational experiences." This quote ties into the picture because when we study together we are collaborating our thoughts. In high school, I wasn't one who enjoyed study groups and working with others. After meeting Ruth this changed I am very open to hearing other people's ideas and having interactive or collaborative discussions and study sessions.
Hallmark 7: We Develop Holistic Learning Communities Which Educate for Life
